Privacy

Short version: we collect as little as we can, we do not sell anything we collect, and we prefer you read anonymously. The long version is below.

What we collect

  • Server logs: standard web-server logs (IP address, user agent, requested URL, timestamp). Retained for 14 days for security and debugging, then deleted
  • Analytics: privacy-respecting, cookieless. We look at page views and referrer counts at the aggregate level. We do not use Google Analytics or any tracker that follows you across sites
  • Comments: not currently enabled. If turned on later, commenter email and optional display name would be stored
  • Newsletter: when a newsletter is enabled, subscriber emails are stored only with the newsletter provider we use at the time. The provider will be named here once selected, along with a link to its privacy policy. Subscribers can unsubscribe at any time
  • Tips: if you contact us, only what you send us. See the Tip Line for how we handle sensitive contact

What we do not do

  • Sell or rent your data
  • Use third-party advertising trackers or retargeting pixels
  • Share reader lists with anyone
  • Build profiles of individual readers

Cookies

We use the minimum set needed for the site to work (session cookies for any logged-in editors, and a cookie to remember light/dark preference if that feature is enabled). No third-party cookies for advertising.

Your choices

  • Read without subscribing
  • Unsubscribe from the newsletter any time
  • Email [email protected] to request deletion of any record we have of you
  • Use Tor or a VPN; the site works fine either way

Children

This site is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them.

Changes

If this policy changes in any material way, the top of this page will note the change and the date. The current version is effective as of the date at the top of this page.
